Volunteering
for city hall employees
The EVCapital 2019 Košice organised special volunteering activities for employees of the City Hall and municipal companies. During the volunteering days in April and May, volunteers repainted 221 dustbins in the city centre and helped the renovation of Centre for Children and Families on Hurbanova Street 42 and the Centre for Children on Pollova Street 18 as well as the improvement of the area of the Historical Evangelical Cementery.
Volunteers at IIHF World Championship
Košice, the European Volunteer Capital 2019, organised Information Days for primary and secondary schools in the field of volunteering. The Volunteer Center of Košice Region introduced the concept and importance of volunteering to pupils and teachers and discussed different volunteering projects and opportunities in which they could participate.
Good Trolley

Košice, the European Volunteer Capital 2019, now has the “Good Trolley-bus” The trolleybus campaign started on Sunday 10 March 2019 and during its first trip, the Volunteering Centre of the Košice Region and the Volunteering Centre of the City of Košice introduced their activities and invited local people to join them. The ‘Good Trolley-bus’ will travel each Sunday during 2019 promoting the activities of different volunteering organisations in Košice such as the Boat of Hope Association, Let’s Dream and Small Farm civil society organisations.
On February 4 2019, Košice together with the Volunteering Centre of the Košice Region organized the 11th edition of the regional awards ceremony “Srdce na dlani”/”Heart on the Palm”. This ceremony has become an annual tradition in Košice as the symbol of high appreciation of the volunteers´ impact. More than 70 volunteers were nominated for the award in different categories, such as Volunteering in Social and Health Care, Volunteering in Education and Teaching, Volunteering Project of the Year, Senior Volunteering and many others.14 volunteers were awarded for their exceptional volunteering activities they carried out in 2018. The representatives of the Košice City and Region participated in the event to show recognition and gratitude for a large number of volunteers in the region.

Heart on the Palm Award
The opening ceremony for Košice, this year’s European Volunteering Capital took place on 15 January 2019. CEV Director Gabriella Civico participated in the ceremony together with the Košice Mayor Jaroslav Polaček, local & regional authorities and representatives from CEV members in Slovakia as well as former EVCapital candidates, pictures from the event here. EU Regions Week
On this occasion, Solidarity and Volunteering were discussed together in a session Chaired by Mr Rastislav Trnka, President of Kosice Self-Governing Region.
In order to promote solidarity, engage citizens and help them to link with EU policies and programmes, we shared experiences and local and regional strategies. It was possible through interactions with poster presentations to know how policymakers contribute to reflect EU values and solidarity in local policies.
We were discussing, in a “World Cafe”, acts of solidarity that facilitate understanding of the EU policy framework and adapting volunteering policies successfully enabling citizens to act in solidarity respecting EU values.
EVCapital 2019 Closing Ceremony on December in Kosice took place the official event to thank Košice as EVCapital 2019, welcome Padova as EVCapital 2020 and congratulate Berlin as EVCapital 2021.
We shared all the memories of the year and plans for the future, the evening was the occasion for the Slovakian Volunteer of the Year awards. The ceremony was an important opportunity to recognise and reward volunteers not only in Kosice but from across Slovakia.
